Our story
The Japanese word あそび (asobi) is a noun that means "play", "game", or "flexibility.” That fluid spirit and the various nuances of the word inspired the creation of ASOBI NY in 2013.
From experimental theater to documentary films, in print or online publications, we have explored our Queer identity as an independent company based in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan. In the process, we have made vibrant connections with fans, patrons, artists and Queer folk in New York City and beyond.
Our mission to promote the works of independent artists—queer or not—is now taking new heights as ASOBI NY moves into the production of live events outside of New York City. Anchored in Manhattan but always looking East and South, ASOBI NY hopes to become a gateway for great talent looking at their work transnationally. For us, that means the USA (NYC), Japan and Peru.
Looking ahead, ASOBI NY is expanding into management and hospitality, areas we have been developing in the last few years.
